Race Update: Following a heart-breaking last-lap incident at Daytona, Johnathon Platt bounced back in spectacular fashion, steering the #13 GFR Racing truck to a dominant victory at EchoPark Speedway (Atlanta).
After the controversy and late-race heartbreak of the Season 16 opener at Daytona, the Bandit Racing League moved to the high-speed banks of EchoPark Speedway (Atlanta) for week two. When the dust settled, it was Johnathon Platt celebrating in Victory Lane, earning a well-deserved redemption after being denied at the line in the season opener.
Platt qualified a modest 10th, but he wasted no time carving through the pack. With clean lines and superb tire management, Platt seized the lead and held it for a race-high 32 laps. Despite multiple restarts and fierce challenges behind him, the pilot of the #13 GFR Racing machine took the checkered flag under running status to secure the victory.
Gibson Charges from the Back
While Platt controlled the front, the performance of the night arguably belonged to Connor Gibson. Starting from a distant P19 on the grid, Gibson sliced through the pack with surgical precision. Dodging incidents and picking off trucks lap by lap, he climbed all the way to a brilliant P2 finish. Gibson led 2 laps and claimed the official Hard Charger honors for the week, gaining an impressive 17 positions.
Michael Ramos completed the podium in 3rd place after a steady and smart race, qualifying 7th and finishing in the top 3. Scott Sanderson brought his truck home in 4th, while Kevin Foster rounded out the top five in 5th place after leading 19 laps during the race.
Heartbreak for Pole-Sitter and Most Laps Led
It wasn't a happy ending for everyone on the grid. Pole-sitter Jackson Knaak saw his hopes of a strong finish vanish when contact with the #84 of David Leakey caused Knaak to make contact with the outside wall. It appears Jackson suffered a disconnect issue shortly after, ending his night and leaving him scored in 34th.
Similarly, Benjamin Lacy was the class of the field for much of the night, leading a race-high 33 laps. However, late-race complications dropped him down to 22nd at the finish line, leaving his crew wondering what could have been.
With Platt's victory, GFR Racing—a powerhouse team boasting several former league champions—proves why they are once again the outfit to beat, keeping the battle in both the Driver and Franchise championships tight as the series heads to week three!
